En palabras de Franco Zeffirelli

1) Normally, today, there is quite a gap between films for a director. It usually takes long a time to set up the project, yet astonishingly there were barely three months between the release of "The Taming Of The Shrew and the start of  "Romeo and Juliet."

2) Little credits for this goes to the moguls of the film business, who, as ever, had no sense of history at all. Despite the fact that the stage productions of R&J had pulled in an unesxpected new, youthfull public, the backers went on insting that Shakespeare was bad box-office. Even after "The Taming Of The Shrew" came out, they fell back on the argument that such success as it was having was due entirely to the appearence of megastars, Richard Burton, and Elizabeth Taylor, and that my interpretation of "Romeo & Juliet implied that the leads would be played by two unknowns, was a recipe for disaster. At first I had little hope of convincing them otherwise, and indeed my agents found almost every door closed on them in their search to find a producer.

3) Cinema has to be more cautious than the theatre because such huge sums of money are involved and, even for a low-budget film like this, it was insanely risky not to have a big-name star somewhere on the billing. On top of that, the cinema with its huge close-ups exaggerates everything, and my principals would have to be extra beautiful and exceptionally talented to pull of so difficult a feat. There was certainly no lack of choice. Agents, mothers and fathers all pushed their clients, sons and daughters forward when they heard we were casting for the ideal "Romeo" and "Juliet." Paramount Pictures wasn't sure how to handle it. On the one hand they were worried about the idea of unknowns playing the lead in the film; on the other, they didn't know what to make of it all, since I appeared to be successful and to know what I was doing. Unable to cope with something so far from their experience, they left me to it for the time being.

4) I tested various combinations of boy and girl, trying to find a pair who worked really well together. The boy turned out to be less of a problem than I feared. Lila De Nobili, who was in London designing a production for Peter Hall at Stratford, told me to look out for a young actor named Leonard Whiting. I did so and, sure enough, he seemed ideal. He was beautiful in that Renaissance pageboy way that was revived during the 1960s. Leo could probably act and, as was obvious when I met him, he was very ambitious.

5) The girl was more a problem. I had seen Olivia Hussey early on in the tests. She had some talent, but she was unfortunately overweight, clumsy-looking and bit her nails constantly - hardly the delicate "Juliet" that I dreamt of. My first choice was a really beautiful girl who stood out because of her sensational hair, a golden cascade that was her best feature. I called her back a month later for a second test, but when she walked in my heart sank. The unisex era was just dawning, and she had had her golden locks trimmed to look like a boy's. I was almost in tears, not merely because I had lost my "Juliet," but also because she had lost her chance of a lifetime.

6) The other parts were less difficult. I cast Robert Stephens as the Prince Of Verona, with Natasha Parry as Juliet's Mother, Pat Heywood as the formidable Nurse, Milo O'Shea as Father Friar Laurence, and then John McEnery as Mercutio. Michael York was delighted when I asked him to join us, thought he was taken aback when I told him that I wanted him to play Tybalt. "Not Romeo.... Mercutio? No, ...Tybalt. But you won't regret it, even with only twenty-four lines, it will be a major role when you see what we will do." He agreed because he trusted me and that left me with my last major headache: "Juliet."

"No Romeo... Mercucio? No, ... Teobaldo.

7) In desperation I summoned back some of those I had earlier rejected and that was how I stumbled on the amazing transformation of Olivia Hussey. She was a new woman! She had lost weight dramatically, and her magnificent bone structure was becoming apparent, with those wide expressive eyes. She was now the real "Juliet"! A gawky colt of a girl waiting for life to begin. I had my cast.

8) We had assembled for work on "Romeo & Juliet" at the end of May (1967), though not in the conventional way, but in rehearsal rooms. That May I moved my entire company into my new house. There we all were, during the hot summer, living as if in a cheerful, busy commune; Olivia and Leonard rehearsing on the lawn; Nino Rota writing the music in the salon; Robert Stephens and Natasha Parry learning their lines or swimming in the pool - it was a dream world.

9) We opened filming on June 29, 1967 in the beautiful town of Tuscania, Italy; about thirty miles from Rome. Then we went to Pienza, Italy, near Siena (Tuscany), and then to Gubbio (Umbria), Italy. We had one week's summer break in August and then went on filming until the middle of October. Althought that is a fairly average filming schedule, it is still a long time to be thrown together so intimately with a group of people, and of course there were the inevitable tensions. I found myself in the role of a father to the kids, trying to help them off screen.

10) Olivia needed this more than anyone else as she came from a broken home and was looking for a father-figure. She responded beautifully to my direction. By the same token, Leonard was the typical teenage boy trying out his ego. He always had to be allowed to do his own way first and I had to be patient, only stepping in when he stumbled. It was a struggle. He was frightened of seeming to be my puppet in front of the others and was over-keen to remind us that he had had some experience. This was exacerbated by the fact that I never needed to tell Michael or John what to do. Leonard chafed at this until I pointed out firmly that they were far more experienced actors than he, and that he had better stop making comparisons, which in the end were unfavourable to himself. That aside, his looks were so perfect for the role; he was the more exquisitely beautiful male adolescent I've ever met.

11) For his part, Michael York was having a wonderful time. A photographer, named Pat, had come from Sunday Telegraph to do a story on us and - another good omen for "Romeo & Juliet" - the two of them (Michael York and photographer Pat) were soon inseparable. They eventually married and have always made a wonderful couple, with her doing much to promote his career. I have more than a soft spot for Michael, I love and admire him. He has been in most of my films and I know no one better to work with.

12) My real problem was more prosaic. My pathetic budget had run out and we were just half-way through filming. The only thing to do was to throw myself at the feet of Charlie Bluhdorn, the head of Gulf and Western, and therefore Paramount. He was no movie maker and notoriously unsympathetic to the problems of directors, but only he could authorize more funds. He made a visit to Rome, where a screening of my first cut sequences was arranged, and I awaited the great man's arrival with some trepidation, as our future was in his hands.

13) He was a boisterous fellow and, as I found later, very lovable in his crazy way. He burst in with his entourage and never stopped barking orders and yelling down the telephone to Hollywood. I suppose he meant well, and he had a reputation for trying to beef up the film business, but what was going on in front of him was obviously not within the range of his experience. He constantly turned to talk to his aides about other matters, the telephone rose and fell; "Romeo & Juliet" passed unheeded.

14) My heart sank, and then suddenly a thin, reedy voice struggled to make itself heard. "Will ya shad-up, Daddy?" Everyone fell silent, it was Bluhdorn's son Paul, who was being taken round Europe by his father. He was the exact opposite of his progenitor - small, thin, bespectacled, with a teeth-brace, aged about fourteen of fifteen. Bluhdorn was obviously impressed by his son's anger. "D'ya like this? Sure! He likes it!" said Bluhdorn in a shocked voice to the others. Then, turning again to Paul he asked: "D'ya understand it? Sure! He understands, well can ya beat that? And I thought we were gonna haf to dub it!"

"¿Te vas a callar papá?"

15) From then on he watched it in silence, or rather he half watched the film and watched his son. By the end of the few scenes the boy was in tears, he thought it was wonderful. And that was it; all because of the kid, the money we needed was found. The picture was finished for a mere 1.5 $ million. But the punchline was even better: it eventually grossed $50 million, the highest ratio of investment to earning in the history of the studio. It virtually saved Paramount.

16) Even in my most self-confident moments I could never have predicted the enormous success of "Romeo & Juliet". From Bronx to Baly, Shakespeare was a box-office hit! The effect on me was stunning. It made me a lot of money, transforming me to someone who could be described as rich and it elevated me from being a European celebrity to someone who was famous internationally.
